The Riley and Walker Hall building renovations at Linfield College illustrate just how extensive and transforming a project can become. These two buildings were originally constructed in the early 1950’s as a single athletic facility in the shape of an “H” with the gymnasium occupying the connecting part of the “H.” Given the diverse needs of the two programs, we proposed dividing the original building into two buildings (Riley & Walker Hall) with a center courtyard. The courtyard also allows additional perimeter wall for daylighting in the two buildings. Close attention to the scale, proportions, and detail of the courtyard are a part of the success of the project.
